so okay no one wants to spend time writing about nothing--fine. hey i should be writing my thesis but i'm so tired i can barely think altho i have most of it done so anyway who cares. the point...the other day i was watching wliw and they were running this show that i guess was outtakes from judy garland's tv show she had for like a year and it was all duets with other people--i had to ask my mom who a couple of the singers with ms garland were but what i realized was what an amazing talent judy garland was. she did a medley with dean martin and frank sinatra that was awesome, she and ethel merman were amazing and she and mickey rooney kicked butt...however when she did songs with peggy lee and barbara streisand they were more subdued--no dancing or in peggy lee's case she didn't know how to sell even "fever" the way judy garland could sell any song and there's an entire type of talent that no longer exists anymore i was trying to think of anyone today who is on the level of judy garland--sure there are singers who can act (babs who i have to say was nowhere near as good as judy in a star is born), but they don't dance, and who out there could ever remake the wizard of oz (don't say diana ross) or meet me in st. louis? and the show closed with what appeared to be a teenage liza minelli singing with her mom and she was amazing she could match her mom like no one else could but she looked scarilly like sofia coppola...ever since lost in translation the only sofia c thing i like is the ad for marc jacobs perfume but i'd hate to see her end up like liza...so it was cool to see but they were hawking the dvd of the show for 75 bucks because they need bucks since those who think bolton is a fit candidate for the UN are hacking the public tv budget...please let god deliver a democrat who can win a presidential election before everything completely goes to hell....and it is going to happen if ....
i take it you didn't see the muppets wizard of oz with ashanti? (fairuza balk doesn't count because her oz movie wasn't a musical) but you're right. there used to be an era where there were specific people in hollywood who's job it was to make musicals. these stars exist now, but in india where the musical is still king. they don't exist here, and it's pretty sad. the ones that can do everything, like Sutton Foster, have their niche on Broadway and in cabaret and are too "broadway" to get their time on screen and to be that kind of icon. and maybe that's a good thing - one really messed up thing about judy's christmas special was that she'd supposedly given liza a black eye before the filming and judy was supposed to introduce her family, but only introduced lorna saying liza was "out with her beau." judy was yo-yo'ed in and out of therapy because mgm didn't know how to deal with a troubled young woman who was also responsible for so much of the studio's profits. but, yeah, i remember thinking a few years back how barbara streisand didn't own fanny brice and wouldn't it be cool if someone had the guts to highlight a modern star in a revival... but who?
